Primetals Technologies relies on SAP HCM

Primetals Technologies is one of the largest plant manufacturers for the metal industry, a metallurgical service partner and a leading provider of digitalisation and automation solutions. The technology group with one of its main branches in Linz is represented in 19 countries and has its HQ in London UK. As a globally active steelworks builder, Primetals Technologies plays a pioneering role for the future of the metal industry. At the Linz site there are around 1,600 employees using SAPHCM.

Previously, some HR processes were carried out outside SAP in an external workflow tool. These processes were gradually integrated into SAP Launchpad and mapped natively in SAP HCM with all its advantages. It is important to have clean basic or master data in SAP, which serves as the basis for all HCM processes. Together, the team from Primetals Technologies, accompanied by INFORMATICS, created the technological basis and set up the Fiori Launchpad.


The SAP Fiori Launchpad functions as a central entry point for all users via the desktop version. The roll-out on mobile devices is to be realised in autumn. Together with Primetals Technologies, INFORMATICS configured the landing page and activated the standard scenarios for HR management. In addition, a customised configuration of the time statement approval process was redesigned to replace the previous analogue processes. For this purpose, an end-to-end digital process was set up. A two-stage approval process was implemented through the electronic control and approval of the time sheets by the employee and the manager themselves. After approval, the times are written directly into SAP TIME. Compared to the past, this reduces the task of the time administrators to checking the completeness of the approvals by means of a report.


A significant advantage of Fiori compared to the previous customer workflow with Web Dynpro is the possibility of personalisation for each user type. Depending on the function, thanks to the integrated role concept, the system displays only those tiles that the employee or manager needs in their daily work. For this purpose, customised hierarchy levels have been included in the system in order to record and map employee-supervisor relationships. This facilitates and accelerates approval processes in the areas of HR management. Through the digitalisation project, the HR processes of Personnel Time Management (PT) are standardised and re-integrated into the original SAP system. This increases usability and efficiency for everyone involved.
