It is not possible to provide a general estimate of the implementation time for the SAP Private Cloud. It varies greatly from case to case and depends largely on your company’s current situation, the complexity of your existing business processes, and the migration path you choose.

• The Impact of the Migration Path: A complete process-based restart (Greenfield) often follows more dynamic cycles. If, on the other hand, you want to migrate a historically evolved SAP landscape—including all existing data and in-house developments—to the cloud (Brownfield or Selective Data Transition), this requires a particularly intensive preparation and testing phase.

There are no standardized flat rates for the SAP Private Cloud, as each project features a customized architecture. The total costs are negotiable on a case-by-case basis and depend heavily on your specific circumstances.

The key pricing factors are essentially determined by the following:

• The migration path: A complete fresh start (greenfield) differs significantly in terms of effort from migrating an existing system, including its data (brownfield).

• The degree of customization: The more complex in-house developments and customized process adjustments are integrated, the more customized the project budget becomes.

• Interfaces & Third-Party Systems: The number and complexity of the subsystems or production machines to be integrated affect the costs.

• Infrastructure & Licenses: Costs depend on the size of the system. Existing SAP licenses can often be applied toward the cost as a credit under the RISE with SAP program.

Not every migration automatically means a complete rollout.

Depending on the initial situation, different migration strategies may be considered. In a brownfield conversion, the existing SAP system is technically migrated to SAP S/4HANA. Business processes, data, and many existing customizations are largely retained in the process.

Alternatively, a greenfield implementation may be appropriate if processes are to be fundamentally redesigned. Between these two approaches, there is another option—selective data transition—in which selected data and processes are transferred in a targeted manner.

The right strategy depends on your business goals, your existing system landscape, and the desired level of transformation.

Both Brownfield and Selective Data Transition (SDT) are proven strategies for migrating to SAP S/4HANA. However, they take different approaches.

In a brownfield conversion, the existing SAP system is technically migrated to SAP S/4HANA. Business processes, Customizing settings, data, and many existing custom developments are largely retained. This approach is particularly well-suited for companies that want to modernize their existing SAP landscape.

Selective Data Transition takes it a step further. It allows companies to decide specifically which data, organizational units, or business processes will be transferred to the new system. At the same time, this approach offers the opportunity to harmonize processes, clean up legacy data, or account for corporate mergers and carve-outs as part of the migration.

Which strategy is the right one depends on individual requirements, the existing system landscape, and the company's long-term goals.

"Clean Core" describes the approach of leaving the SAP standard as unchanged as possible and implementing custom requirements outside the actual ERP core.

This makes future updates easier, allows innovations to be implemented more quickly, and significantly reduces maintenance costs in the long term.

Existing in-house developments are therefore evaluated collectively as part of a migration. Where the standard SAP system already meets the requirements, custom developments can be eliminated. Additional functions can be implemented using modern extension options, such as those available on the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).

So "Clean Core" doesn't mean sacrificing individuality—it means implementing individual requirements in a way that's future-proof.

In general, master data, transaction data, and historical information can be transferred to a new SAP S/4HANA landscape. However, the specific data that should be migrated depends on the company’s business and technical requirements.

Depending on the migration strategy, either nearly all data is transferred or only selected information is migrated to the new system. Especially with systems that have evolved over many years, this often presents an opportunity to clean up data, harmonize structures, and improve data quality in the long term.
