New Kardex "Space Shuttles" at Hainzl

Warehouse optimisation at Hainzl Industriesysteme GmbH thanks to mobile applications on the handheld scanners.

SPACE SHUTTLES

Hainzl Industriesysteme GmbH, based in Linz, purchased five new Kardex shuttles, which are used for warehouse consolidation. "One shuttle holds approx. 60 trays and is used for the storage of small parts. We had to expand or adapt the mobile application of the handheld scanners so that the individual shuttles could be addressed directly via the handheld," explains Marcel Majer, SAP Logistics Consultant at INFORMATICS.

The strategies for storage and retrieval were implemented accordingly. "All storage locations and their sizes are stored in the system. The system automatically searches for a free storage space for the right size and moves the appropriate tray out.

IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE RIGHT STRATEGY

The logic behind this is to find out which shelf can hold the most materials.
The strategy behind this is to move out as few trays as possible in order to store the materials. A laser also shows the warehouse operator the correct storage location.

"The special thing is that we can bundle several deliveries during picking using waves and thus pick materials cumulatively at the same time. This saves an extremely large amount of time." In the best case, five people can pick at the same time and thus make the best possible use of the shuttles.
